Jakarta (VNA) – The Indonesian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the Indian Ministry of Coal are working together to develop and test the underground coal gasification (UCG) technology in two locations in India’s West Bengal and Rahihajit regions. Technology Director at the Indian ministry Peeyush Kumar said the implementation of UCG technology is expected to help increase energy availability, conserve natural resources and reduce energy costs.

Gas distributor PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) saw its net profit fall 87.6 percent year-on-year (yoy) to US$6.72 million in the first half of the year as a result of weak energy demand and government gas incentives. The publicly listed company’s revenue fell by 17.9 percent yoy to $1.47 billion in the January-June period, dropping more sharply than its expenses, which declined by 16.7 percent yoy to $1.01 billion following operational cuts.

GE Renewable Energy announced that it has secured two 30 MW contracts to supply a total of 12 units of GE’s 5MW-158 Cypress wind turbines to support construction of the Quoc Vinh Soc Trang and Lac Hoa Soc Trang wind farms, located in the Mekong Delta, Southern Region of Vietnam. PowerChina Huadong Engineering Corporation will provide full Engineering, Procurement and Construction services for the projects.

Coal-fired power will remain a key energy source for Vietnam for several decades to come despite the boost in renewables, senior officials say. Without coal-fired power, Vietnam will have to confront energy insecurity, Deputy National Assembly Chairman Phung Quoc Hien said Monday at a meeting between the parliamentary Economic Committee and Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh.

SEREMBAN, Sept 8 — Five commercial premises at a business area in Seremban 2, were raided by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Seremban City Council (MBS) on suspicion of stealing electricity to carry out Bitcoin cryptocurrency mining activities, causing TNB to lose up to 250,0000 per month. MBS Legal and Enforcement director, Hanizam Ahmad said in the raid which started at 8.30am involving 30 TNB staff and 50 MBS enforcement officers and personnel, 203 Bitcoin machines worth RM8,000 to RM12,000 each were seized.

BANGKOK (Sept 8): Thailand’s cabinet has approved plans to reduce the country’s huge crude palm oil (CPO) stockpile to shore up domestic price. Deputy government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek said the cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister General Prayuth Chan o-cha today approved the National Palm Oil Policy Committee’s proposal to export 300,000 tonnes of CPO by March next year.

Policy makers should give coal a chance to evolve into a non-polluting fuel, despite anti-coal lobbying, according to several participants at the 29th Clean Coal Day International Symposium. The online symposium is to underline how greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced and mitigated from coal-based thermal power stations. At least 20 countries have written in support of this conference, including major economies such as India, Canada, Australia and the United States.
