ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS) III Report

Executive Summary

  • The ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study III, hereinafter referred to as AIMS III, is a flagship study by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and Heads of ASEAN Power Utilities/Authorities (HAPUA) under the direction of the ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) to explore the viability of multilateral electricity trading in the ASEAN region. The purpose of this study is to enhance grid resilience and modernisation in order to provide an affordable and resilient electricity supply and accommodate higher shares of renewable energy (RE) to the grid.
  • At the 39th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) held in Brunei Darussalam on 15 September 2021, it was noted the completion of the ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS) III Phases 1 and 2, which set out the transmission infrastructure needed to support multilateral power trade in ASEAN and renewable energy integration into the ASEAN Power Grid (APG).   • Findings of ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS) III Phase 1 & 2 Update that was reported at the 41st ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) held in Bali, Indonesia on 23 August 2023 highlighted that the updated Power Development Plan (PDP) of every ASEAN Member States results show that the current efforts by the 10 AMS will bring the region to reach 39% RE share by 2025, only 5% less than the target in the ASEAN RE Target scenario. Under this Updated Scenario, ASEAN foresees 44.5 GW of solar and 14.3 GW of wind capacity by 2025 and even higher growth towards 2040.
