PUTRAJAYA: With the appointment of Datuk Dr Siti Hamisah Tapsir as secretary-general, the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry (Mestecc) is now led by three accomplished women engineers.

Its minister, Yeo Bee Yin, is a chemical engineer, her deputy, Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis, an electrical engineer and Hamisah a civil engineer.

Hamisah, who clocked in yesterday, was appointed to replace Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Azhar Yahaya, who retired on Nov 6.

Yeo said Hamisah was appointed due to her experience in academia and the Education Ministry, as well as her education background.

“Hamisah is the most suitable and qualified candidate.

“It is a coincidence that she is a woman.

“I did not select her because she is a woman, but due to her motivation and qualifications. She can help lead the ministry.

“Coincidentally, we are all engineers,” she told the New Straits Times here.

Yeo said an engineering background would help them understand their respective positions better.

“Mestecc is special because it is very science, technology, engineering and mathemetics (STEM) heavy. It is very technical and our background helps us comprehend the subjects and make quick decisions.”
