On-site power generator INNIO could help develop a microgrid project in Thailand.

INNIO signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) to support development of a microgrid demonstration at EGAT’s proposed zero-emissions energy excellence center. The authority is planning to install a Jenbacher gas engine from INNIO which would run on renewables such as biogas and green hydrogen.

“We are excited to work with INNIO on this project, as we develop a green microgrid demonstration project at EGAT,” Patana Sangsriroujana, deputy governor of strategy for EGAT, said in a statement. Our plans are to install that kind of solution across Thailand and possibly beyond.”

EGAT plans to build its Learning Center in Bang Krui, Nonthaburi, and complete it by the end of 2020.

The Jenbacher gas engine would be integrated with other technologies such as a battery storage system. Wind and solar power would be utilized and help power an electrolyzer system producing green hydrogen.

“EGAT’s zero-emissions energy excellence center in Thailand is expected to be a lighthouse project for the entire southeast Asia region, and we are excited to be a part of this innovative venture,” said Carlos Lange, CEO & President, INNIO. “INNIO’s Jenbacher gas engines run on natural gas, or a variety of other gases, such as biogas and hydrogen.”

INNIO has deployed more than 68 GW in gas-engine power capacity to a wide variety of industries in Thailand, Lange added.

The Austrian company originated as Jenbacher in the late 1950s. GE acquired the Jenbacher brand and later sold it to Advent International last year to create the INNIO brand.
