April 6 (Renewables Now) – Singapore-based Sunseap Group Pte Ltd said Tuesday that it has signed a virtual power purchase agreement (VPP) with Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) to offload electricity generated by its 5-MWp offshore floating solar farm in the Straits of Johor.

Under the multi-year contract, Sunseap will export the electricity to Singapore’s national grid, while the social media giant will collect all renewable energy credits (RECs) associated with the floating plant.

The VPPA will support Facebook’s operations in the island city-state, including its first custom-built data centre in Asia, said Sunseap.

The latest agreement is the second time Sunseap and Facebook reach for the VPPA model to support renewable energy development in Singapore. In October 2020, the two companies signed a VPPA for 100 MWp of solar photovoltaic (PV) to be exported to the grid on behalf of Facebook in exchange for RECs.

The contracted power will come from rooftop solar arrays installed on top of over 1,200 buildings in 2022.
