POSCO International announced it has completed a photovoltaic power generation system on Manaung Island near the Myanmar Gas Field.

Manaung Island is home to more than 60,000 residents, but its power infrastructure is poor with only three small generators, according to the company.

This time, POSCO International set up a solar power system that combines a 500 kW solar power generation facility and 2,000 kWh energy storage system (ESS). The new facilities can stably supply electric power to about 1,000 households on Manaung Island 24 hours a day. The power supply is expected to enhance the operation of sanitation facilities such as public health centers and residents’ productivity in agriculture and fisheries, ultimately making a big improvement to their quality of life, according to a press release.

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 — The reinstatement of crude palm oil (CPO) export tax starting next month is unlikely to affect demand for the local commodity in the European Union (EU), according to the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC).

Its chief executive officer, Datuk Dr Kalyana Sundram, said the EU market is less troubled by the pricing mechanism and more concerned about the quality and sustainability of the products, which Malaysia’s CPO can offer.

After onion and garlic, prices of edible oil have registered a sharp rise due to costlier imports. Consumers will have to dig deeper into their pockets as the cooking oil prices may rise further, say oil industry experts.

Palm oil prices have shot up by Rs 20 a litre (more than 35 percent) in the last two months. Palm oil’s meteoric rally has led to a sharp rise in the prices of other edible oils.

“The prices of all edible oils have increased following the rise in palm oil over the last two months. Due to costlier imports from Malaysia and Indonesia, edible oil prices are likely to see a further increase,” Oil-oilseed market expert Salil Jain told IANS.
