Industries and households may be encouraged to voluntarily cut electricity use during an extreme gas shortage, with power rationing being a last resort, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) told The Straits Times on May 9.

Malaysia has launched the commercial trading of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) through the Malaysian Green Attribute Trading System (mGATS) to be operated by Tenaga Nasional Bhd. The commercial trading of the certificates through mGATS commenced on May 8.

Neste and the Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group have signed an agreement for the purchase of 1,000 tons of neat Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel. This will make SIA and Scoot, the two airlines in the Group, the first carriers to receive sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), produced at Neste’s refinery in the country, at Changi Airport.

Danish companies NIRAS and Copenhagen Offshore Partners (COP) have joined forces on a project to kickstart the development of offshore wind farms in the Philippines. COP designated NIRAS to conduct the local environmental impact assessments (EIA) and environmental social impact assessments (ESIAs) for the future offshore wind farm sites.

The Malaysian government has agreed to establish the Energy Exchange Malaysia (Enegem) to facilitate cross-border sales of green electricity to neighbouring countries. The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry said the setting up of Enegem is in line with Malaysia’s energy transition aspiration and commitment to support regional power integration via the Asean Power Grid Initiative.

Saraburi, which houses Thailand’s key cement plants, is expected to start converting waste to energy in a project led by the Thai Cement Manufacturers Association (TCMA). CMA has developed a pilot project to create ‘ignitable waste pallets’, which will replace imported coal in cement production, according to TCMA chair Dr Chana Poomee.
