Summary
With its abundant biomass resources and high potential for carbon storage, ASEAN has significant potential to implement BECCS (Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage), a two-step negative emission technology that can advance the region’s carbon neutrality goals. The 8th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO8) projects that the region’s bioenergy capacity could exceed 100 GW under the Carbon Neutrality Scenario.
However, challenges related to resource availability and land use, technical and economic considerations, environmental and social dimensions, as well as infrastructure and logistics issues, need to be addressed to ensure sustainable BECCS development. This report explores BECCS’s role in global climate strategy, its application across industries, and the opportunities and challenges from an ASEAN perspective, offering recommendations for effective BECCS implementation in the region.
