ASEAN Energy Booklet Volume 2: Nuclear Energy Development in ASEAN
9 August 2024
Key highlights:
Nuclear energy poses as a cleaner alternative energy option to supplement the intermittent characteristics of variable renewable energy, providing a flexible and secure electricity supply.
The ASEAN region has shown interest in developing nuclear energy, with the Philippines and Indonesia leading the nuclear energy development by constructing and operating the first operable Nuclear Power Plant by 2032.
In order to fully develop nuclear energy, the ASEAN region has to establish legal and regulatory frameworks for nuclear safety, increase nuclear literacy, establish nuclear energy planning coordination, and integrate enabling policies and regulations on nuclear power. Promoting international collaboration and financing mechanisms for nuclear power projects should also be done in order to support the development of nuclear energy in ASEAN
