ASEAN’s Path to Harmonised Air Conditioner Standards: Progress, Challenges, and Economic Implications

The ASEAN region is experiencing a sharp rise in cooling demand, with air conditioner energy consumption projected to reach 35.5 MTOE by 2050. In response, ASEAN has adopted increasingly stringent Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS) for room air conditioners, aiming to reach a regional benchmark of CSPF 6.09 by 2030. While countries like Singapore lead in implementation, others face challenges in manufacturing readiness and affordability. Despite these barriers, coordinated efforts—such as regional policy roadmaps, technical assistance, and the ASEAN EE&C Working Group—are paving the way for harmonised, energy-efficient cooling across the region.
