Electric Vehicle Adoption in ASEAN: Prospect and Challenges

Energy demand in the transportation sector is increasing, and the transportation sector currently emits a high amount of greenhouse gases. Electric vehicles (EVs) were introduced to mitigate these emissions of greenhouse gases. EVs are well-deployed in leading countries such as China, Europe, and United States due to EV-friendly policies and well-planned EV charging infrastructure. Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) follows these leading countries and aims to become the next EV hub. Effective deployment of EVs requires involvement from governments and willing consumers that push EVs into communities. A survey was carried out among policymakers, manufacturers, and academia to determine suitable policies and financial incentives to increase the deployment of EVs in the market. The survey also included the hurdles and issues faced by the community to adopt EVs and identified that high purchase cost and charging issues are hampering EV deployment in ASEAN. EV-friendly policies and financial incentives were suggested in the survey and will be a good reference material for EV manufacturers and policymakers in ASEAN.

Recommendations for Updating the ASEAN Regional Policy Roadmap on Energy Efficient Air Conditioners

ASEAN has rich renewable potential such as hydropower, solar power, and geothermal energy, including untapped high-speed and low-speed wind potential. As located mostly in the tropical hemisphere, the region’s potential is mostly on low wind speed. This report explores a redefined wind turbine technology which taking the advantage of the low wind speed potential, namely the low-wind-speed power (LWSP).

Harmonising on Energy Efficiency Standards for Room Air Conditioners in Southeast Asia

This report provides an overview of seasonal AC energy-efficiency metrics, assesses the regional climatic conditions in ASEAN countries, and make recommendations for adopting ISO standard 16358 in a harmonised way across the region.

It explores ASEAN-specific temperature profiles, the United for Efficiency (U4E) Model Regulation Guidelines’ temperature bin hours, as well as ISO 16358 temperature bin hours to evaluate the efficiency of ACs. The results show the superiority of CSPF over the traditional energy-efficiency ratio (EER) metric for capturing the higher seasonal efficiency of variable-speed ACs.
