The 6th Webinar of DISG: “Promoting Green Growth and Energy Transition in ASEAN Region”

26 August 2021

The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) participated on Thursday, August 26, 2021, in the 6th edition of the DISG series of webinars, “Promoting Green Growth and Energy Transition in ASEAN region”. Other key figures from the ASEAN Secretariat, Ministry of Trade, Economic and Industry (METI) Japan, and Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) shared the latest information of ASEAN-Japan collaboration in the Green Growth field and the importance of promoting energy transition with Asia Energy Transition Initiative (AETI), Japan’s comprehensive support initiative for the energy transition in Asia.

In his speeches, H.E. Satvinder Singh, Deputy Secretary-General of ASEAN for ASEAN Economic Community pointed out, “The COVID’s impact presents new opportunities to leverage green growth and energy transition in Japan and the ASEAN region by supporting clean energy development inclusively. The ASEAN’s recovery strategies underline the ongoing efforts to facilitate energy transition and promote resilience through the APAEC Phase II: 2021-2025. Building a better and much more sustainable future and recovery will enhance resilience, and it also aims to maximise opportunities on potential ASEAN’s internal markets and our products”.

Dr Nuki Agya Utama, the Executive Director of ACE, stressed the point, “While all of the ASEAN Member States (AMS) collectively agreed that achieving energy transition is a common goal, it is essential to note that each country has its uniqueness and diverse energy system. There is no single solution to significantly address the energy transition, security, and sustainability challenges to mitigate climate change. The directions should consider the country’s national social and economic circumstances and needs, with diverse energy resources, demand dynamics, affordability, appropriate technologies, financial resources, and cultures”.
