The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) successfully delivered the 3rd Steering Committee Meeting for the Feasibility Study of Indonesia – Malaysia Cross-border Interconnections on 15 May 2025. The meeting is intended to be held every 4 months throughout the feasibility study development. After the previous 1st Steering Committee Meeting in Malacca on June 2024 and the 2nd Meeting in Kota Kinabalu on October 2024, the third meeting was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, inviting Steering Committee members from PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero) (“PLN”) and Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (“SESB”) who joined in person. Steering Committee members from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (“TNB”) joined the meeting online.

The objective of the meeting was to discuss the recent progress of the feasibility study, future implementation of the cross-border interconnections between Sumatra and Peninsular Malaysia, and between North Kalimantan and Sabah, and to address future partnerships between the utilities. All SC members expressed their commitment to put the feasibility study forward and to use it as a reference for the upcoming interconnection development.

The Indonesia – Malaysia Cross-border Interconnections Feasibility Study explores the potential for new cross-border power interconnections between the two countries (APG Project No.4 Sumatera – Peninsular & APG Project No.15 North Kalimantan – Sabah). In 2024, a grant agreement was signed between the US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) and PT PLN (Persero). The proposed interconnections are part of the recommendations stated in the ASEAN Interconnection Masterplan Study (AIMS III) which expects to allow electricity trade, help match power supply to meet local demand and maximise renewable energy-based power generation in both countries.
