On 25 September 2018, Directorate General of Mineral and Coal of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia organised a workshop on ASEAN Coal Database Information System (ACDIS) in Bali, Indonesia. The workshop was attended by delegates and representatives from six (6) ASEAN Member States; Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Thailand.

ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) also sent their representative, Mr. Visal Veng (Senior Energy Research Analyst), to participate in this workshop in the efforts to establish fully functional ASEAN Coal Database Information System (ACDIS) that could support the Coal and Clean Coal Technology Programme under the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) 2016-2025.

To jump-start the workshop, ACE delivered an opening remark to highlight the importance of ACDIS in the coal sector. ACE also took the opportunity to give a presentation on ASEAN activities in coal cooperation, with the projection that coal will be the region’s fastest growing fuel for power generation until 2040.  ACE has identified that ASEAN’s coal-fired power plant capacity reached 63 GW in 2015. It is projected to be 95 GW in 2025 and 196 GW in 2040, taking up the highest share in the ASEAN electricity generation mix by 2025. (VV.
