Hydrogen in ASEAN – Economic Prospects, Development and Applications

30 August 2021

The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) announced the launch of the new report “Hydrogen in ASEAN – Economic Prospects, Development and Applications”. This report reviews the economics of hydrogen energy based on its latest development technologies and its applications in power storage, transportation, and export business in the ASEAN Member States (AMS). Mainstream hydrogen production pathways are considered, including green hydrogen production from renewables, grey hydrogen production from natural gas and coal, and blue hydrogen produced from fossil fuel plus Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) or Carbon Capture Storage and Utilisation CCUS technology.

“The source of producing hydrogen is crucial. When hydrogen comes from renewable sources, all the fuel in vehicles could be close to or even truly achieve zero emissions. The AMS are rich in energy resources that can be mobilised to supply both blue and green hydrogen and power the transport sector by applying fuel cell technologies”, said Dr Nuki Agya Utama, the Executive Director of ACE. Jonathan Goh, A Senior Official on Energy (SOE) Leader and Director of External Relations, Energy Market Authority, Singapore, then added, “Today, hydrogen is a much-discussed topic, with many challenges remaining. For example, a global supply chain and an extensive infrastructure (storage and transport) must be established. This analysis by ACE is recommended to help and support the sustainable energy transition”.
