The import of renewable electricity by Singapore from Lao PDR in June 2022 marked a milestone in Southeast Asia’s energy landscape. This groundbreaking move has cast a spotlight on the region’s burgeoning cross-border electricity trade. Beyond securing the infrastructure – through bilateral and multilateral cooperation for grid development – ASEAN member states are actively exploring ways to maximise the economic benefits of this trade. One promising avenue lies in the adoption of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs).
