Jakarta, 15 November 2023 – In a leap towards regional collaboration in the critical domains of electrical safety and energy cooperation, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Korea Electrical Safety Corporation (KESCO) on Wednesday, 15 November 2023, at the ACE Headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia.

This collaborative initiative represents a significant milestone in the joint efforts of ACE and KESCO to cultivate a robust partnership and champion electrical safety endeavours within the ASEAN region.

Dr Nuki Agya Utama, Executive Director of ACE, and Mr Jihyun Park, President of KESCO, formally endorsed the three-year MoU, underscoring their commitment to collaborative energy initiatives and the amplification of electrical safety standards across the ASEAN region. In addition to fostering regional cooperation in the energy sector’s electrical safety, this MoU also aims to contribute to the implementation of the ASEAN Plan for Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II: 2021-2025.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Dr Nuki Agya Utama, Executive Director of ACE, stated, “This collaboration with KESCO is a significant stride towards achieving our mission of advancing energy cooperation in the ASEAN region. Together with KESCO, we will make a substantial impact on electrical safety in the energy sector.”

Mr Jihyun Park, President of KESCO, echoed this sentiment, reaffirming their shared commitment to collaborative energy initiatives. He stated, “Our partnership with ACE is founded on a shared vision for a secure and sustainable energy future. Together, we aspire to pave the way for advancements in electrical safety and energy cooperation.”

Under the provisions of this MoU, ACE and KESCO will engage in a diverse array of collaborative activities, including collaborating on Official Development Assistance (ODA) programmes for ASEAN member states related to electrical safety in the energy sector, facilitating the exchange of electrical safety-related information through various platforms, conducting joint research and sharing information to publish reports on common interest topics, raising awareness of the respective activities, and sharing information related to the MoU for efficient cooperation.

ACE and KESCO anticipate the positive outcomes that this collaborative venture will bring to the ASEAN community, emphasising shared responsibility and collective action.

About ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE)

Established on 1 January 1999, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) is an intergovernmental organisation within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) structure that represents the 10 ASEAN Member States’ (AMS) interests in the energy sector. ACE supports the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), a blueprint for better collaboration towards upgrading energy. The Centre is guided by a Governing Council composed of Senior Officials on Energy from each AMS and a representative from the ASEAN Secretariat as an ex-officio member.

The three key roles of the ACE:

  • As an ASEAN energy think tank to assist the AMS by identifying and surfacing innovative solutions for ASEAN’s energy challenges on policies, legal & regulatory frameworks and technologies.
  • As a catalyst to unify and strengthen ASEAN energy cooperation and integration by implementing relevant capacity building programmes and projects to assist the AMS develop their energy sector.
  • As the ASEAN energy data centre and knowledge hub to provide a knowledge repository for the AMS.

Keeping the region’s improvement, sustainable and harmless to the ecosystem is a fundamental concern of the ASEAN energy sector.

Hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia, ACE’s office is located in Jakarta, Indonesia.
