The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE), Universitas Gadjah Mada, and University of Agder have previously been conducting a long-term cooperation as research partners. The first cooperation was implemented as a student seminar on ASEAN Master program conducted on November 29, 2022, where ACE took a role as one of the panelists.

As the continuity of earlier collaboration, Prof. Stein Kristiansen intended to discover wider research opportunities which will be involving his students as well. He is currently the study program coordinator for ASEAN Master in Sustainability Management organized by Gadjah Mada University (UGM) and University of Agder; and funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In this case, he puts his research interest on economics of natural conservation, energy transition, and environmentally sustainable economic development.  [/vc_column_text][vc_single_image image=”16335″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_column_text el_class=”photo-caption-news”]Figure 1. The proposed research objective is to find an efficient way to speed up the process in achieving net zero target for ASEAN member states (AMS). There will be several interviews held for the data collection process. As one of the considerations, the process will involve energy-related stakeholders, financial institutions, industries, and communities as the energy consumer. The research also potential to discuss about stakeholder’s opinion on internalizing externalities, response towards energy mix on the renewable energy, and the financial advantages from the renewable energy project in ASEAN.

Aldilla Noor Rakhiemah, Senior Research Analyst of ACCEPT II sees this as a good opportunity in the emerging issue of low carbon economy. It is also interesting to take carbon pricing and trading as one of the topics. Prof. Stein added that this proposed research could also analyze the emerging business opportunities to scale up the economic development for ASEAN countries. Moreover, I Dewa Made Raditya Margenta mentioned that a comparison study between each ASEAN’s nations is needed to have better perspectives on renewable energy management.

Furthermore, this study is expected to give recommendations towards stakeholders in achieving their net zero target. Hopefully, the collaboration will result in an insightful input for the stakeholders as a step forward in the energy transition and accomplish a net zero target.
