Jakarta, 20 August 2024 — The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and Huawei are delighted to officially launch the ASEAN Energy Data Centre today at ACE Headquarters in Jakarta, Indonesia, today. Powered by Huawei FusionModule, the Data Centre symbolises ACE’s commitment to embodying Green, Simple, Smart, and Reliable (GSSR) principles at its core to showcase the future of data centre technology.
To commemorate the launch, Dr Nuki Agya Utama, Executive Director of ACE, welcomed Mr. Jin Song, CEO of Digital Power Business Indonesia, PT. Huawei Tech Investment, and the representatives of Huawei at the ACE Headquarters.
Dr Nuki Agya Utama, Executive Director of ACE, expressed his enthusiasm for this collaboration, stating, “Data centre have emerged as one of the key energy-intensive subsectors in Southeast Asia and globally. According to our study, “Building Next Generation Data Center Facility in ASEAN”, ASEAN Member States (AMS) have a total of 1.5 GW data centres in operation, with more under planning. ACE is committed to advancing sustainable energy solutions in ASEAN, showcased by adopting cutting-edge data centre technology, improving its energy efficiency while strengthening ACE’s role as a regional think tank and knowledge hub. We hope that this initiative will set an example of sustainable and energy-efficient data centre facilities across the region, driving us towards a smarter and greener future.”
Mr. Jin Song, CEO of Digital Power Business Indonesia, PT. Huawei Tech Investment, echoed the statement, stating that “Digital transformation is booming in the ASEAN region. Massive data and huge computing demands have emerged, unlocking great potential in the data centre market. Driven by innovation, Huawei Digital Power is committed to helping partners build green, simple, smart, and reliable next-generation data centres.
To jointly build the ASEAN Energy Data Centre with ACE, Huawei adopts efficient and energy-saving product solutions to improve data center energy efficiency. The data center will play a leading role in helping the ASEAN digital industry accelerate green and low-carbon transformation”.
However, opportunities always come with challenges. Due to the tropical climates of the ASEAN region, data centers feature high cooling requirements, high energy consumption, and power usage effectiveness (PUE) values far higher than the global average. Therefore, with local conditions in mind, ASEAN governments are promoting the application of renewable energy and energy conservation technologies to meet sustainability requirements for digital development.
Designed with optimised PUE, the data centre utilises the latest row cooling and power management technology that significantly reduces energy consumption while maintaining optimal performance. It was developed in line with ACE and Huawei’s commitment to facilitate the development of ASEAN’s green data centre industry.
Moreover, the establishment of this data centre not only showcases ACE’s commitment to implementing energy efficiency measures but also aims to support its activities as a knowledge hub and centre of excellence in ASEAN, supporting ASEAN Energy Database System (AEDS), among others. Through this collaboration, ACE and Huawei seek to implement sustainable and intelligent practices, in advancing energy security, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability across ASEAN.

About ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE)
Established on 1 January 1999, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) is an intergovernmental organisation within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) structure that represents the 10 ASEAN Member States’ (AMS) interests in the energy sector. ACE supports the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), a blueprint for better collaboration towards upgrading energy. The Centre is guided by a Governing Council composed of Senior Officials on Energy from each AMS and a representative from the ASEAN Secretariat as an ex-officio member.
