31st Renewable Energy – Sub Sector Network (RE-SSN) Annual Meeting of the ASEAN Energy Cooperation in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) successfully organised the 31st Renewable Energy – Sub Sector Network (RE-SSN) Meeting, hosted by the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) of Malaysia. This significant event, held on 14 June 2024, marked the culmination of a series of meetings from 10 to 14 June 2024 at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 

The gathering brought together representatives from ASEAN Member States (AMS), invited Dialogue Partners (DPs) and International Organisations (IOs), ASEAN Secretariat (ASEC), and ACE. The primary objectives were to review the current status, provide progress updates, and discuss strategies to achieve the milestones set out in the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II: 2021-2025 for Programme Area No. 5: Renewable Energy (RE).

The meeting commenced with opening remarks by Dato’ Mohamad Razif bin Hj. Abd Mubin, Deputy Secretary General for Energy, Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation of Malaysia. This was followed by remarks from Dr. Nuki Agya Utama, Executive Director of ASEAN Centre For Energy (ACE).

The morning session began with a discussion involving invited Dialogue Partners and International Organisations, including representatives from Aus4ASEAN Futures, USAID Southeast Asia Smart Power Program (USAID SPP), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI). This session focused on updating progress on ongoing cooperation activities with ASEAN. A group photo concluded the open session before moving to the closed discussions.

The subsequent sessions included detailed discussions among representatives from eight (8) AMS: Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia (joined virtually), Lao PDR, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, along with ACE and ASEC. Key updates were shared by Septia Buntara Supendi, Senior Officer of ASEAN Secretariat, regarding opportunities for project proposals related to Renewable Energy. Rika Safrina, Senior Research Analyst at ACE, presented the development progress of the 8th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO8). Dynta Trishana Munardy, Technical Officer of APAEC Department at ACE, discussed outcomes from the APAEC Drafting Workshop, and Beni Suryadi, Head of ACE, provided updates on RE projects and upcoming activities.

The afternoon session began with Christopher G. Zamora, Senior Head of APAEC Department at ACE, presenting the outcomes and follow-up requirements from the previous 30th RE-SSN Meeting. Norhasliza Mohd Mokhtar, BOJ Chair, reported on the ASEAN RE Project Awards BOJ Final Meeting held on 10 June 2024. Mohd Erwan Misran, Deputy Undersecretary of PETRA Malaysia and RE-SSN Chair, then led the discussion on APAEC Phase II Milestones Implementation and Monitoring.

The final agenda item was a report on 2024 Lao PDR’s Priority Energy Deliverables, presented by Muhammad Ilham Rizaldi, Research Analyst of SRE at ACE, focusing on the initial findings of the RE Long-term Roadmap. The meeting concluded with closing remarks from Mohd Erwan Misran. Before adjourning, the meeting discussed on the next venue for the 32nd RE-SSN Meeting and its Associated Meetings, where Malaysia will be the host for the next year’s RE-SSN Meeting which also supporting the next year’s ASEAN Chairmanship under Malaysia.
