The ASEAN Board of Judges (BOJ) for ASEAN Energy Efficiency and Conservation Awards convened in Vientiane, Lao PDR on 14 May 2024. Hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Mines, Lao PDR, the judges discussed the evaluation and awardee selection for the ASEAN EE&C Awards 2024. The meeting was attended by BOJ members from eight ASEAN Member States (AMS) – Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and representatives from the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE). 

Aiming to promote energy efficiency and sustainable practices, the ASEAN EE&C Awards 2024 consists of the ASEAN Best Practices for Energy Efficient Building (EEB) Awards, Green Building (GB) Awards, and Energy Management for Building and Industry Awards. The significance of these awards was emphasised by Mr. Khammanh Sopraseurth, Deputy Director General Department of Energy Efficiency and Promotion, Ministry of Energy and Mines, Lao PDR, in his opening speech. 

“Since its inception in 2000, the ASEAN EE&C Awards has been a key driver in advocating energy efficiency practices, innovation, and technological advancements in building and industry. This effort aligns with our target of achieving a 32% reduction in energy intensity by 2025, as outlined in the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II (2021-2025)” said Mr. Khammanh. Ms. Apiradee Thammanomai, Director of Strategy and Planning Division, Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) Thailand, and the EE&C-SSN Coordinator, added, “ASEAN Energy Awards have been a long-standing prestigious award given to establishments with outstanding implementations of energy efficiency measures and energy management systems.” 

Christopher Zamora, Senior Manager of ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Department at ACE, highlighted the broader impact of the awards. As ASEAN aims to achieve an energy intensity reduction target of 32% by 2025 under the APAEC Phase II: 2021-2025, he emphasised that the ASEAN Energy Awards not only recognise outstanding initiatives in sustainable energy practices but also disseminate innovative strategies and success stories to inspire further advancements in energy efficiency across the region.

For this year, the ASEAN EE&C Awards received a total of 66 submissions across the categories, consisting of 25 entries for the Energy Efficient Building Category, 13 entries for the Green Building Category, and 28 entries for the Energy Management for Building and Industry category. The BOJ has selected the winners and runners up from each category, which endorsed by 28th ASEAN EE&C-SSN Meeting. Additionally, the judges also discussed various feedback and improvements in the award mechanism, including the submission guidelines, quality of submissions, and scoring system for next year’s awards. 

The selected winners and runners-up will be announced and awarded during the 42nd ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) Awarding Ceremony hosted by Lao PDR in September 2024. The results will also be updated on the ASEAN Energy Award webpage.
