Online, 8 July 2021On July 8th, 2021, ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI) organised a Warm-up Seminar on Wind before the China-ASEAN Clean Energy Capacity Building Programme. This Seminar was held virtually and offline in Nanning, Guangxi, China, back-to-back with the Global Offshore Wind Summit 2021 (GOWS-6). This Seminar focused on promoting the large-scale development of ASEAN wind power.

Mr Zhou Shichun, Deputy Director of the International Cooperation Department at CREEI, started the discussion with a presentation on the Development Potential of Low-Speed Wind Power in ASEAN Countries. The conversation continued by Dr Akbar Swandaru, Senior Officer of Power, Fossil Fuel, Alternative Energy and Storage (PFS) Department at ACE, on The Plan and Prospect of ASEAN Wind Power Development. Both discussions were based on the ACE-CREEI joint study, Research on Applications of Low Wind Speed Power in ASEAN, which is expected to be launched at the 5th East Asia Summit Clean Energy Forum and the 4th ASEAN+3 Clean Energy Roundtable Dialogue on September 1st – 2nd, 2021.

Following the discussion on wind power development in ASEAN, several AMS were given time to deliver Key Practices of Wind Power Development. Indonesia was represented by Mr Soeripno, Chairman of Indonesia Wind Energy Society (IWES); Mr Ronaldo T. Angeles represented the Philippines, Senior Science Research Specialist in Solar and Wind Energy Management Division, Renewable Energy Management Bureau, Department of Energy; Thailand was represented by Ms Tarntip Settacharnwit, Senior Professional Scientist in Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE), Ministry of Energy; while Vietnam was represented by Ms Pham Thuy Dung, Senior Official in Electricity and Renewable Energy Authority, Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The next session was delivered by Chinese speakers, discussing the Technology Advances in Off-Shore and Low-Speed Wind Power and their applicability in the ASEAN region. Two case analyses on China-ASEAN Wind Power Cooperation were also presented to find out ongoing developments. This event concluded with the First Overseas Offshore Wind Power EPC Project presentation to support green energy development along the belt and road.
