Bali, 24 August 2023 – The ASEAN International Conference on Energy and Environment (3rd AICEE) returns for its third year, fostering collaboration among academia, policymakers, and industry experts to address pressing energy and environment challenges in the ASEAN region. The 3rd AICEE is organised by the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) of the Republic of Indonesia.

Themed ‘Accelerating a Just, Secure and Resilient Energy Transition in ASEAN through Innovation and Interconnectivity,’ this year’s AICEE holds particular significance as it coincides with the ASEAN Energy Business Forum (AEBF) and the 41st ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM-41), creating a synergistic environment for interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder collaboration across ASEAN.”

Central to the conference discussions is the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC) Phase II: 2021-2025, a regional blueprint for energy cooperation that is implemented by ACE. Embracing energy transition as a cornerstone element of achieving regional energy security and environmental sustainability is a central tenet of APAEC.

Dr Zulfikar Yurnaidi, Manager of ACE and Chairman of the 3rd AICEE, added, “The conference theme this year reflects our commitment to forging a sustainable energy path for ASEAN.”

With more than 150 abstract submissions and near 100 paper presentations, this year’s AICEE conference promises an array of topics that reflect the multifaceted nature of energy and environmental challenges. These topics include:

• Energy Transition and New Emerging Technologies: Discussing the dynamic shift towards sustainable energy sources, policy incentives, and energy efficiency enhancements.
• Interconnection: Security and Accessibility: Addressing energy grid interconnectivity, cyber and physical security, and fostering regional cooperation.
• Sustainability, Engineering, and Infrastructure: Exploring practices to reduce emissions, promote renewable energy, and enhance climate resilience across sectors.
• Carbon Pricing and Green Investment: Highlighting the importance of carbon pricing and green investment mechanisms to transition to low-carbon technologies.
• Energy and Digitalisation: Examining the intersection of energy and digital technologies, including IoT and blockchain, for efficient energy systems.
• Environment, Policy, and Socioeconomics: Analyzing the multidimensional nature of the energy transition, from policy and governance to international cooperation.

AICEE’s academic partners and co-host institutions play a pivotal role in the conference’s success. Universitas Pendidikan Nasional (UNDIKNAS) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) to co-host the event, contributing expertise and resources. Additionally,  academic partners, namely Universiti Teknologi Nasional (UNITEN) Malaysia, ASEAN Climate Change and Energy Project (ACCEPT) II, Energy Research Institute (ERI), Chulalongkorn University, University of Hawai’i, Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) and support of National Energy Technology Center (ENTEC), Thailand bring invaluable insights to the table.

About ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE)

Established on 1 January 1999, the ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) is an intergovernmental organisation within the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) structure that represents the 10 ASEAN Member States’ (AMS) interests in the energy sector. ACE supports the implementation of the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), a blueprint for better collaboration towards upgrading energy. The Centre is guided by a Governing Council composed of Senior Officials on Energy from each AMS and a representative from the ASEAN Secretariat as an ex-officio member.

The three key roles of the ACE:

• As an ASEAN energy think tank to assist the AMS by identifying and surfacing innovative solutions for ASEAN’s energy challenges on policies, legal & regulatory frameworks and technologies.
• As a catalyst to unify and strengthen ASEAN energy cooperation and integration by implementing relevant capacity building programmes and projects to assist the AMS develop their energy sector.
• As the ASEAN energy data centre and knowledge hub to provide a knowledge repository for the AMS.

Keeping the region’s improvement, sustainable and harmless to the ecosystem is a fundamental concern of the ASEAN energy sector.
