The APAEC Phase II: 2021 – 2025 was endorsed last year during the 38th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting with the theme of “Enhancing Energy Connectivity and Market Integration in ASEAN to Achieve Energy Security, Accessibility, Affordability and Sustainability for All” and sub-theme of “Accelerating Energy Transition and Strengthening Resilience Through Greater Innovation and Cooperation”.

The Civilian Nuclear Energy under the APAEC Phase II will have a key strategy “To build human resource capabilities on nuclear science and technology for power generation”, which consist of the following outcome-based strategies:
1. Improve nuclear energy literacy and public engagement.
2. Strengthen Regional and International Cooperation on Nuclear Energy for Power Generation.
3. Build Human Capabilities on Nuclear Legal and Regulatory Frameworks for Power Generation.
4. Enhance Human Resource Capabilities on Nuclear Science and Technology for Power Generation.

To implement the APAEC, through the signing of MOU, ACE and WNA will partner to implement initiatives with focus on (i) Economics and Financing of Nuclear power programme, (ii) Training and information on nuclear energy and effective nuclear communications, (iii) Nuclear Power and Emerging Nuclear Technologies, etc.

Dr. Nuki Agya Utama, the Executive Director of ACE stated, “Realising the fast-growing energy demand, in the region as well as the limitation of fossil fuel reserve in combination with the potential increase of share in vRE for power sectors. In the future, the best possible alternative baseload for the power plant will be coming from nuclear.”

Dr. Sama Bilbao y Leon, Director General of World Nuclear Association, said: “We are truly delighted to announce this agreement and excited about the opportunity of working together with the ASEAN Centre for Energy. This partnership comes at a most opportune time to address ASEAN member states’ growing demand for energy to support economic development and demographic growth, as well as the world’s most defining issue of our time: climate change. Nuclear energy already plays a major role in delivering human and economic development globally through the provision of clean, affordable and reliable electricity, and we believe nuclear power can hugely benefit the ASEAN Member States (AMS).”
