The ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) has been invited by The Economist and Dubai Chamber of Commerce to participate in Powering the Future Economy session.
Introduction of the session:
More so than any other part of the world, ASEAN is at the centre of tensions between energy supply and energy transition. Three-quarters of the global demand for coal comes from Asia, with South-East Asia’s market growing fastest. ASEAN’s energy demand will grow by as much as 60% by 2040. Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia are rich in fossil fuels, yet the surge in demand will increase the region’s reliance on imports in years to come. The Gulf, already a significant exporter of oil and gas to the ASEAN region, is well placed to fill the supply gap. The Gulf is also making substantial headway in rolling out solar power – a renewable energy source with enormous potential in the ASEAN region.
How can the two regions work together to ensure ASEAN’s growing energy needs are met and navigate the new energy dynamic? What new collaborative business opportunities can support both regions’ transition towards low and zero-carbon energy?
