ASEAN Guideline on Off-grid Rural Electrification Approaches

30 April 2013

Key Points

  • Access to reliable energy services is crucial for economic activity and sustainable development in remote rural areas in the ASEAN member states.
  • Rural electrification was therefore high on the political agenda of the countries over the last decades and continues to be an important issue for a number of countries in the region.
  • However, despite those efforts and a lot of ongoing initiatives, an estimated 130 million people in the ASEAN region do not yet have access to electricity what underlines the importance of continuing activities.
