ASEAN’s energy consumption is projected to increase by approximately 2.6 times by 2050 compared to 2020, driven by rapid economic development and population growth. In response, ASEAN Member States (AMS) are actively exploring low-carbon hydrogen—both green and blue—as a key solution to meet future energy demand while fulfilling their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and regional commitments to carbon neutrality. According to the Carbon Neutrality Scenario (CNS) in the 8th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO8), hydrogen demand could reach 50.33 Mtoe by 2050, underscoring its vital role in ASEAN’s long-term energy transition.
This booklet delves into the opportunities and challenges in scaling up low-carbon hydrogen in the region, offering targeted recommendations and identifying priority sectors such as industry, transport, and power generation. It highlights the pressing need for clear national strategies, infrastructure development, pilot projects, and regional cooperation to unlock the full potential of hydrogen.
