Unlocking Energy Transition Finance Towards Inclusivity and Sustainability in ASEAN

The ASEAN Public Conference on “Unlocking Energy Transition Finance Towards Inclusivity and Sustainability,” held in Jakarta on 9 May 2025, convened over 90 stakeholders and high-level support from regional and international partners. The forum underscored the urgent need for inclusive financing and cross-border collaboration—particularly through initiatives like the ASEAN Power Grid—to accelerate the region’s sustainable energy future.

Boosting RE through APG: Malaysia and Indonesia’s next move in pursuing cross-border interconnection

To meet rising electricity demand, ASEAN must integrate 3,205 TWh of renewable energy by 2040 under the Carbon Neutrality Scenario, as outlined in the 8th ASEAN Energy Outlook. The ASEAN Power Grid (APG), especially the Peninsular Malaysia–Sumatra Interconnection (Project No. 4), plays a crucial role by enabling 15.4 TWh of cross-border RE trade. Achieving this requires Malaysia and Indonesia to overcome investment and grid synchronisation challenges through policy alignment and long-term agreements.
