The Ministry of Electricity and Energy (MOEE) is planning to restart operations at a state-owned chemical fetiliser plant in Magway Region, a senior government official revealed.

Deputy Minister of Electricity and Energy Dr Tun Naing said on Monday the ministry will restart operations at the No. 3 Chemical Fertiliser Plant (Kyaw Swa) owned by Myanma Petrochemical Enterprise.

The plant started producing chemical fertiliser in 1984, but suspended its operations in 2011 due to limitations in obtaining natural gas from MOEE.

Dr Tun Naing said the plant will be upgraded with modern technology to make it commercially viable.

He added that the plant, which is expected to have a production capacity of 600 tonnes a day, is being restarted to meet local demand for fertiliser and will obtain its natural gas from the Shwe Natural Gas Project.

Besides the No. 3 Chemical Fertilizer Plant (Kyaw Swa), the government owns another four fertiliser plants: No. 1 Chemical Fertiliser Plant (Salay), No. 2 Chemical Fertiliser Plant (Kyunchaung), No. 4 Chemical Fertiliser Plant (Myaung Daga), and No. 5 Chemical Fertiliser Plant (Kan Gyi Dauk).

Currently, operations are suspended at No. 3 Chemical Fertiliser Plant (Kyaw Swa), No. 1 Chemical Fertiliser Plant (Salay), and No. 2 Chemical Fertiliser Plant (Kyunchaung).
