ASEAN & US Are Advancing Civil Nuclear Power Together

The United States of America (U.S)’s Department of Energy and ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) co-organised a workshop on Civil Nuclear Power in Jakarta, Indonesia on 19 January, 2016. The participants included 35 delegates from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, the U.S and Vietnam. The Workshop serves as a knowledge sharing and discussion platform on essential policy elements for developing a safe, secure and publicly accepted civil nuclear power programme.

The contents of the Workshop were provided by Idaho National Laboratory, Texas A&M University, U.S Department of Energy, U.S Department of State, U.S Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and Westinghouse Electric Company.  The topics that were covered included: (i) Partnering to Develop a Nation’s Infrastructure for Nuclear Power; (ii) The Need for an Independent, Transparent and Expert Nuclear Regulator and Regulatory Frameworks; (iii) Liability Regime and the Convention on Supplementary Compensation for Nuclear Damage (CSC); (iv) Public Outreach and Acceptance of Nuclear Power; and (v) Human Capital Development.
