The 7th ASEAN Energy Outlook Public Webinar

25 October 2022

Online, 20 October 2022

ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) held a public webinar of the 7th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO7) with all ACE experts virtually on October 20th 2022, attended by more than 300 participants. The webinar is a follow-up to the launching of AEO7 at the 40th ASEAN Ministers on Energy Meeting (AMEM) in September 2022. This event shared the key findings and provided insights into each perspective from three pillars of ACE, namely, energy modelling and policy planning (MPP), renewable energy and energy efficiency (REE), and power, fossil fuel and alternative energy (PFS).

The session starts with opening remarks from Dr. Nuki Agya Utama as ACE Executive Director delivered his welcome address stressing that the AEO7 reports will project the existing and realistic energy landscape in ASEAN to gather insights to explore a more challenging future.

Followed by quiz facilitated by Ms. Amira Bilqis, ACE Associate Officer to find out participants’ knowledge about the latest energy updates in ASEAN.

As the first speaker, Dr. Zulfikar Yurnaidi, AEO7 team leader, presents a “Navigating Energy Transition in ASEAN”. In his presentation, Dr Zulfikar pointed out the crucial role of batteries and energy storage as explained in the LCO scenario, that its capacity is expected to need 26.6 GW (battery capacity) to store around 1100 GWh of electricity by 2050. The second speaker, Ms. Rika Safrina, Chief Editor of AEO7, explained the dynamics and projection of energy demand in ASEAN. She pointed out that by 2050, the industry and transport sector will be the highest energy-consuming sector in the Southeast Asia region.

Moving onto the talk show session, Dr. Nuki raised a concern on potential net importer of both natural gas and coal projection impacting the region’s energy security in the future. Mr. Beni stressed that the last decade there has no significant additional reserves identified due to exploration challenges, especially in deep-water areas. Thus, he explained that energy security concern is evitable and need to be holistically addressed. Dr. Nuki continued to ask Dr. Andy Tirta (MPP Manager) concerning the projection impacts the ASEAN countries’ commitments to realized net zero targets. Dr. Andy emphasized that combining energy with climate and industrial policies would be a good instrument for AMS to meet their net zero or carbon-neutral target while also putting the onus on energy diversification for AMS. Talking about energy efficiency, Dr. Nuki turned to Mr Septia Buntara (REE Manager) asking what type of energy efficiency policies, and in which sector, should ASEAN vigorously enforce. He listed several potential efforts targeting end-users for the most cost-efficient measures transportation, cooking, and cooling.

Dr. Nuki directed questions about the affordability aspect of the future ASEAN energy sector sustainability to Ms. Alnie Demoral, Lead Modeller of AEO7. Further discussion on energy efficiency policy was given to Mr. Septia B. Supendi (REE Manager). Furthermore, Dr. Andy Tirta (MPP Manager) explained the projected impact of the commitment of ASEAN countries to realize the net zero or carbon-neutral target. The last, Mr. Beni Suryadi (PFS Manager) conveyed his big point regarding the possibility of alternative energy that the public can accept.

Dr. Nuki picked three emerging questions from the participants concerning the proper and measurable target on energy transition, long-standing issues of energy efficiency, and the importance of energy cooperation and ACE could support ASEAN Member States’ ambitions.

In the closing session, Amira explained that the AEO7 dissemination plan such as AEO7 will be featured in Singapore International Energy Week and Asia Nuclear Business Platform. ACE will also conduct a webinar series starting mid-December 2022 from various perspectives and will conduct a country launching.
