Background

Under the ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), a regional blueprint on energy sector, ASEAN region has set aspirational targets to meet the 23% renewable energy (RE) share in Total Primary Energy Supply (TPES) and 35% share of RE in ASEAN installed power capacity by 2025. Based on the latest publication of ASEAN Power Updates 2021, ASEAN region has reached 33.5% of total RE installed capacity in 2020. However, in term of TPES, the share of RE in TPES based on the 6th ASEAN Energy Outlook would only around 13.6% in baseline scenario in 2025. Therefore, ASEAN Member States (AMS) would have to significantly strive to add to RE capacity to achieve these targets.

The deployment of large-scale renewable energy systems by accommodating higher shares of renewables in the ASEAN Power Grid (APG), would create the challenges on providing reliable and stable electricity generation due to intermittent production from RE. Therefore, to accommodate greater flexibility, energy storage would play a central role with its capacity to avoid major infrastructure investment and reduce the constraints on the transmission and distribution network.

The workshop is expected to serve as a platform to exchange the information on the development of energy storage in global and regional levels, in terms of technological development; best practices of energy storage deployment; policy, regulatory and business model. The workshop could also provide possible actions to move forward the role of energy storage in achieving ASEAN’s goals on RE. Moreover, the workshop will also ultimately support the APAEC Phase II to ensure energy transition and energy security in the region.
