  • Asia Climate Summit (ACS) 2022 organized by International Emission Trading Association (IETA) in collaboration with International Carbon Action Partnership (ICAP), International Energy Agency (IEA) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) on 6-8 December 2022 at Marina Bay Sands Conference Hall in Singapore.

The ACS features keynote addresses, high-level plenaries, cross-cutting deep-dive workshops, and roundtables, and a central ‘carbon market lounge’ with partner sponsors display counters, a networking chill-out lounge and catering areas. It was held as an in-person event with some sessions in a hybrid format to allow for virtual participation.

The closed day meeting & invitation consisted of several workshops where one of the workshops was IEA-ICAP-KAS Carbon Pricing Dialogue.  The workshop brings together regional experts to share experiences and discuss the common barriers they face when designing and implementing long-term climate policy packages that include carbon pricing. The workshop was divided into four sessions namely scope and coverage & carbon pricing instrument choice, the role of CBAM and climate clubs, industrial decarbonisation, and regional roundtable. The ACCEPT II delegate has been invited during the session 2: the role of CBAM and climate club. The session explored the implications of any CBAM and the role of carbon pricing in climate clubs with a goal to identify and review important elements of interest for Asia-Pacific jurisdictions, as well as address any key questions from the regional perspective.

The session invited four speakers across Asia and Europe who were Muhammad Shidiq (ASEAN Center for Energy / ACCEPT II project), VK Duggal (Asian Development Bank), Xiaolu Zhao (Environmental Defense Fund EDF China) and Thomas Forth (Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Germany). On behalf of ACCEPT II, Shidiq has delivered information that CBAM is also a new topic of discussion across ASEAN countries. Currently, there is not much information and discussion related CBAM and the implications and impact both from EU to ASEAN countries and vice versa among the ASEAN member states. Since the ACCEPT II is an energy-related climate project, CBAM is one of the topics of discussion and/or study to be considered to undertake during the ACCEPT II for implementation from 2022 – 2026. ACCEPT II is open for any collaboration opportunities with any stakeholders to implement energy related climate activities that may cover but not limited to net-zero emissions, carbon market, and others.

On December 7th, the main discussion has mainly covered topics on trends & outlook of Asia carbon market; carbon pricing, market and decarbonisation from Asia perspective; and building a robust data infrastructure for carbon markets by launching of the Climate Action Data Trust (CAD Trust). On December 8th the topics of discussion revolved around fostering voluntary carbon markets in Asia; and role of carbon markets in financing net-zero for Asia Pacific action & leadership.

ACCEPT II welcomes collaboration, hence please feel free to contact Mr Muhammad Shidiq at [email protected]
