Learning about Clean Coal Technology from Japan

As part of ASEAN Centre for Energy (ACE) and Japan Coal Energy Centre (JCOAL) cooperation, a programme to share knowledge on Clean Coal Technology (CCT) was organised on 1 March – 8 March 2016 in Japan. The activity was attended by sixteen delegates from Ministry of Mines & Energy of Cambodia, Research & Development Center for Mineral and Coal Technology of Indonesia, Ministry of Energy and Mines of Lao PDR, Ministry of Energy, Green Technology and Water of Malaysia, The Energy Commission of Malaysia, Department of Geological Survey and Mineral Exploration of Myanmar, No. 1 Mining Enterprise of Myanmar, Department of Mineral Fuels of Thailand, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, PTT Energy Resources Company Limited of Thailand, Vietnam National Coal – Mineral Industries Holding Corporation Limited (Vinacomin) and ACE.

In the beginning of the programme, each ASEAN Member State delivered a country report presentation on CCT development. To achieve the main objective in promoting CCT, participants visited Matsuura of Kyushu Electric Power, Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Nagasaki works, Okinoyama Coal Center, and Isogo Power Plant. Participants learned about the best practices and application of the latest technology and concept in Coal Power Generating Systems. In the end of the programme, ACE presented an overview of Coal Power Plant Capacity and CCT initiatives in ASEAN Member States, to kick off the meeting with Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), Japan. The meeting is expected to boost the promotion of cleaner coal utilisation in the power sector, to accelerate coal power development, to facilitate public acceptance of coal, and to open any possible CCT cooperation between ASEAN and Japan.
